companions

Elder Wilcox and his companion Elder Jacobson.  Elder Jacobson is from Harrisville.  He has family that lives in Syracuse.  Not too far away from us.

September 23, 2013

The week is over. It has been a very interesting week. A lot of trials, and a lot of success came from it as well. I will try to remember all that I wanted to put into this email, and let ya'll know how the work is going here, and as well how I am doing.

It rained for about 24 hours here in arlington on friday, and after that.... IT's been in the 70's and 80's!!! It may finally stay cool here in Texas haha Today is a nice 80 degrees I imagine. The rain is not very fun to be in though. But luckily we won't be getting rain anytime soon, and the weather seems to be staying down in the cooler area. Humidity isn't all that bad eather. But nevertheless, I still find myself sweating a ton!! But I think that's just partially me, and not necessarily the weather haha

In this area we are really struggling, and have struggled to find quality investigators, those whom the lord has prepared to recieve the gospel. It has been a bit disheartening at times, and has been a big trial/struggle for me. I often find myself getting discouraged. I recieved some council, and a paper from a missionary who just recently came home from his mission (Jared Carter, for medical reasons, has to get his knees fixed) He copied us this page, Read Write and pray. To sum it up real quick, we have a question in mind that we want to learn/study about. We then pick a chapter of scripture to read out of the book of mormon, (It specifically works with the book of mormon, for reasons I will later explain.) and we pray and ask god to help us learn how this chapter applies to our question, we then write down we learn, and what stood out, We summarize what we learned, and we then pray again, and report to god what we learned, and we ask him to open our understanding a little bit more, and to learn more, and recieve the answer we are looking for. We take notes, and write the impressions we feel, and we summarize again what we learn, and account to the lord for it. We then ask the question, is what I've learned true? So i decided to try this in my studies this morning. I have been feeling a bit discouraged for the past few days, so my question I had was "Am i where i'm suppost to be?" I decided that I would read Alma 8, it seemed fit, seeing how alma went through a lot of trials, and struggles in preaching to the people of ammonihah. The direction and answer I recieved was truly inspiring, and wonderfull. I feel that god already knew, that I knew that I needed to be out here, so instead of straight telling me that/directing me to that. He pointed out other items in that chapter for me to remember, and apply into my life. A few details of that, Remember the oath and covenant of the priesthood, remember the covenants that I have made with god, what holding the priesthood means, Friends are there to help me through trials and struggles, and that i'm never alone, and the lord is always looking after me, and the importance of working with members, in order to find those whom the lord has prepared, I will be sending my mom a copy of this paper, so if any of ya'll would like to follow it, you would be able to find the answer to gospel questions you have. Now as to why it works better with the book of mormon, It is used so investigators that have a quesiton, can read a certain passage, and pray and recieve an answer to that quesiton, thus helping them to learn and realize that the book of mormon is true. It works for us as well, with the book of mormon, and even in Doctrine and Covenants. I enjoyed my studies so much this morning, and was able to learn so much, that I wish I could put it all in this email, but there is not enough time, nore can text letters explain everything that I feel and know. I know this church to be true!! I know with all my heart, with every fiber of my being that the book of mormon is true!!!! I am out here doing the lords work, and he will help and support in doing so. I have a burning testimony of the restoration of the gospel of jesus christ on the earth once again, in preparation for the 2nd coming of our lord and savior jesus christ. I encourage each of you, that if you have a gospel question, to take into the sscriptures, and try this out. I know that it works ,and that the book of mormon answers the questions of the soul.

love,
Elder Wilcox

              CALLED TO SERVE-February 6, 2013

Alexia, Mariah, great grandma Irving, and me (Ami)
                                   missing my mom Susan

D&C 84:88

I finally wrote Austin to tell him about his funny granny.  This is what I wrote.  I pray he will understand and be comforted.
The early morning of July 18th, 2013 Great Grandma Irving passed away.  She lived to be 95 and 4 months.  She had a stroke which caused her brain to bleed.  When I arrived in Idaho on Tuesday she was in a coma.  It all happened so fast.  I like to think grandma Wilcox welcomed her to the spirit world.  It was Granny's time to leave this earth, all is well.  Yes, I am sad.  This has been a difficult year, but also such great blessings too.
I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up. D&C 84:88
The blessings of your service, Elder Wilcox, are noticed.

TIME

6 months ago, my oldest son left to serve a the Lord.  I cannot believe it has been 6 months.  I miss him as much as I did the day he left.  Time has not made that easier.
He has accomplished a lot in 6 months and his testimony is growing.  This week he was able to attend the Dallas Temple.  Jeff and I were married there 23 years ago.
He got a call from President Ames this week and will be training a new missionary.  He is really excited.
This weeks letter was 1/4 of  a page long.  A very short letter.  However,  he wrote Blake a 3 page letter.  I am ok with Blake receiving the best letter:). I have always told Austin that he is his brothers keeper.

A Glorious Homecoming

Today, is a new beginning for another loved one.  How do I tell my son his great granny, his funny granny, has left this earth?   He told us before he left to not let him know when someone dies.  So, I wont tell him.  A sadness overwhelms me.  But, yet maybe he knows.  His great granny was 95, it was her time.  Austin named his great grandma funny granny when he was just a little boy.  She has kept that title.  He has one more angel to guide him on his mission.  Granny had a different belief than us. I know Heavenly Father loves her anyway.  Perhaps, Elder Wilcox's other grandma will help granny find her way.
She will be missed, just like my sweet mother in law.  I have to remember there is much good amidst the pain.

Chiggers are probably one of the most vile creatures in the world!!!! They are a little microscopic bug, that lays it's eggs inside of you, and then when the larvae hatch inside of you, they die, and release a horrible chemical that makes you have to itch really bad. My legs right now are covered in them!! I have many more now, than I do in these photos. Never go through the tall grass in Texas!!! Consider yourselves warned. But, they go away eventually, I have had mine for about 2 weeks, and sadly they are pretty much scarring because I am itching them so much. I even shaved my legs, below the calf, because I was sick of the clear goo it released when I itched, and it left mats in my leg hair, so I shaved that part of my legs, to relieve that feeling of uncomfort. Well, Best of luck this week fellas, word hard, share the gospel, and bring other souls to christ.

Love, Elder Wilcox

NEW ADDRESS

Elder Austin S. Wilcox
3251 Matlock Road Apt. 7206
Mansfield, Texas  76063

July 10, 2013

We received a letter from the mission president dated on June 27, 2013.  Elder Wilcox has been appointed to serve as a Senior Companion in his proselyting area.
Austin has been gone for 22 weeks now.  He is doing well, and his obedience is obvious.

He has been transferred to Mansfield, Texas and is in the Arlington 5th ward.  There is a big difference between Waco and Arlington.  Waco had a lot of lower income homes and Arlington is quite the opposite.  The ward in Waco was huge, but in Arlington the ward is smaller.

His new companion is Elder Mertlich is his new companion, and has been in the mission field for 3 months.

Overdue Post - June 4, 2013

Elder Wilcox has a new companion.  Elder Webb, he is from Logan Utah and has been in the mission field for 14 months.  This is Austin's 2nd companion in Waco.
Austin has been out for 16 weeks now! I keep waiting for it to be easier.  I think of my 2 missionaries quite often.  Little things through the day will bring back fond memories of my mother in law, who is a missionary in the spirit world, and my son.  I know his grandma is there with him, as well  with the rest of us.  She is very proud of her grandson.  He is her first grandchild to serve a mission.  She was there when he filled out his mission papers.  She was in the spirit world when he received his call.
Elder Wilcox loves the gospel of Jesus Christ, and his atonement.  Alma 7:11-13 and in Preach My Gospel chapter 3, lesson 2 - the atonement, all that is wrong in life, can be made right through the atonement of Jesus Christ.
Alma 32- the seed is planted.  Austin loves being a missionary.  He still has good days and still has bad days.  He has days when he is homesick, and days when he doesn't think of home.
He was saddened to hear about the death of sister Monson, said he is thankful for temple marriages, and the knowledge we have with the plan of salvation and that families can be together forever.
Austin was really sick this past Saturday.  His zone leaders gave him a blessing.  He was better for church on Sunday.  He has such great faith.
Summer is quickly approaching.  Time will be passing much faster.  It will be different this summer to just have 2 of our kids at home.  I hope I can keep up this blog.
Please keep Austin in your prayers.
"Do not pray for easy lives.  Pray to be stronger men! Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers.  Pray for powers equal to your tasks.  Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be the miracle."  Phillips Brooks
"No matter how much an individual or family may sacrifice for a mission or anything else, unless missionaries choose obedience, consecrating all of their time, talents, and resources, in the service of the Lord while they are in the mission field, they can not fully realize all the great blessings the Lord has in store for them." Robert D. Hales

Prayers go out to the people in Fort Worth.  I am thankful Elder Wilcox is in Waco.  I never knew that area was tornado infested.  One more item to turn over to Heavenly Father.

Mothers Day gift, his missionary name tag

Mothers Day 2013

Elder Wilcox is very obedient.  Twice a year we get to talk to our missionary.  Mother's day was one of them.  There is a time limit of 40 minutes max.  In his letter yesterday, he apologized for hanging up at 39:59.  He said he had to be obedient.  He also hopes we are not mad at him for this.  We are not mad, just very proud of his obedience.
"The way of the gospel is a simple way.  Some of the requirements may appear to you as elementary and unnecessary.  Do not spurn them.  Humble yourselves, and walk in obedience.  I promise that the results that follow will be marvelous to behold and satisfying to experience." quote by President Gordon B. Hinckley
He is an example to me.
Mother's day was wonderful.  Being able to talk to Austin was a bonus.  His mission president only allows them to call.  I was thankful for even a phone call.  He sent me a  missionary tag to clip on my scriptures, and an awesome handwritten letter.
"The atonement has put such a huge change in my own life.  Through the atonement I can be forgiven of those mistakes, and feel the inspiration of the holy ghost in my life,  it is a blessing to have it, a lot of the way through high school I did not accept the guidance of the holy ghost.  I felt a drastic change in my life while preparing to serve a mission, it is truly incredible.  The holy ghost plays such an important role in our lives.  There is a distinct happiness I can recognize when I have the holy ghost.  When I don't have it  I tend to get down and depressed and my mind is bogged down with thoughts.  But when I do have it,  I am able to think of the positive aspect of life, and how it has blessed me, and all the wonderful things that I have.  I love the gospel of Jesus Christ!!!  If there is on thing the mission has taught me thus far, it is that I want the holy ghost with me for the remainder of my life!!!  I am not happy when he isn't there, but the happiness I feel when he is there, is incredible, he truly is the comforter as explained in John 14:26, he comforts every single day out here, every struggle I have he is there. " paraphrased from Elder Wilcox's Monday letter
During his phone call he recommend us to be more faithful in prayer and scripture study.
Transfers are this week.  Austin will be receiving a new companion.  Elder Webb.  He will be staying in Waco.
I love this boy, and am grateful he chose to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

A MOTHERS DAY LETTER

"My dearest beautiful mother,
Happy Mother's Day!!!
I would like to thank you for all that you have done for me.  I truly am blessed to call you my mom.  You have done so much for me in my life, and you continue to love and support me.  But, most importantly I would like to thank you for raising me in the gospel.
Words cannot explain how happy I am that you and dad raised me in the church.  it has made all the difference in my life.  It is so wonderful to know about the plan of happiness that death is not forever, and that we will get to see loved once again.
I hope you have a Fantastic Mothers Day!  I look forward to talking with ya'll on the phone.
love,
Elder Wilcox"

I am grateful for a son that remembers his mom.  I look forward to our phone call tomorrow on Mothers Day.

MTC Renuion

May 6, 2013

I am a blessed mother.  There are times when I was raising my 4 children that I wondered if Heavenly Father had made a mistake.  I feel inadequate to be a mother to wonderful children, and at this time especially Austin.  My heart is so completely full it is leaking out of my eyes.  I have less than a week until I talk with my favorite elder.
In his letter today it is his 3 month anniversary for being out in the mission field.  I wonder, as a mom, will it get easier?   I enjoy the blessing of peace that has encompassed my home since he left.  I feel like my Savior has his arms wrapped around my family.
The missionaries had a conference this week.  Elder Cook spoke to them.  Austin wrote, "the one specific thing that nearly brought me to tears was the end of the conference talk he gave, where he promised us that those who have left/or strayed from the gospel will come back.  It brought such joy to my heart, and I KNEW!!! that what he said was true.  It brings great comfort into my heart."
Austin is so excited for all of his friends that are receiving their mission calls.  he said that Arizona will be money for Dallyn Zaugg:)
"Jesus Christ is the son of God!!! Through  Jesus Christ, and his atonement, we can treturn to live with our Heavenly father, and be worthy to enter in his presence, and feel an incomprehensible joy that will exceed anything that we feel on this earth.  I look forward to the day where I can look up at the Savior, and honestly tell him that I have done all that I could, and for Him to accept me into the celestial kingdom, and allow me to enter into his presence for eternity" Elder Wilcox's  testimony.
He and his companion have many baptisms this month.
Words cannot express the feelings that I am feeling.  He is a great example to me, and so many others.  I will never forget when I brought him home from the hospital and I had an overwhelming feeling he would be my first missionary.  I knew it without any doubt.

Monday April 29, 2013

Its a great day when I receive an email from my favorite missionary.  It has been a great week for Austin.  He is learning fast what it takes to be a missionary.  He is starting to be able to see the big picture and realize that this is preparing him for the rest of his life.  Its tough, but definitely worth it.  This weekend a member of the quorum of the twelve is visiting, Quentin L. Cook.  Austin is very excited.
The weather seems to be bipolar in Waco.  It seems more drastic than our weather.  One day it is 80 degrees and very humid and the next its pouring rain and 40.  Kind of sounds like our weather in Syracuse, Utah.
He has finished the book of Mormon and is focusing on Jesus the Christ.
He loves the gummy bears I sent him.  Hehehe  He also commented that his weight continues to increase.  I have pictures that he sent me.  We will be the judge of that.  I cant imagine Austin gaining too much weight.
His spiritual thought was upon finishing the book of Mormon and how depressing the last couple of chapters
of Moroni are... the anguish that Mormon and Moroni feel for the nephites and the lamanites is immense, and you can feel the sadness in their words.
I love being a mom, and I am so blessed that my Heavenly Father has entrusted me with 4 wonderful children.  My blessings continue to grow.

I AM BLESSED

I received another letter today.  I was singing with joy when I walked back from the mailbox.  Good thing my neighbors are not home.
He sent us the map of where he is serving and the baptismal program of the latest baptism.
He talked about making good friends, and being a member missionary.  He regrets not inviting friends to church.  "Every member is a missionary!"
"Friends can make a huge difference in your life.   Some friends fill your mind with poison and let Satan influence you for the worst.  But, there are friends out there, who fill your mind with the gospel and help you to become a better person, and a better member of the one true church.  I am grateful for the friends that I have had, that made living the gospel so much easier." quoted from Elder Wilcox
This is such great advice from Austin.  I pray and pray my other boys will listen to this advice.
Once again, I love this elder.  He is the best.  Keep him in your prayers, please.
love,
Elder Wilcox's mom

April 22, 2013

I missed a week.  But here is the update on Austin.  He is determined to serve the Lord.  Times can be tough out there.  He said "I will stay and serve the Lord with all my heart might mind and strength!  D&C 4)  I couldn't be more proud of him.
He did not feel the explosion of the fertilizer plant in West, Texas.  He is hoping this will give them the opportunity to teach the Plan of Salvation.  He is studying hard.  He is enjoying JESUS THE CHRIST.  He is learning about life.
"As we rely on the atonement of Jesus Christ, He can help us endure our trials, sicknesses, and pain.  We can be filled with joy, peace, and consolation.  All that is unfair about life can be made right through the atonement of Jesus Christ"
He misses us like crazy, but he also knows he is there to serve the Lord.  He mentioned the movie Gladiator.  In the end of the movie Maximus's friend said I will see you again, but not yet.  Thats how he feels about his family.  Jeff knows the ending, but it looks as if I will be watching at least the end of Gladiator.
His last remarks:
THE CHURCH IS TRUE!!!  I LOVE YOU ALL.
I now have one more week to wait for another letter.  I treasure these letters and read them often.  Sometimes I miss my son so much the tears cannot help but run down my cheeks.  Life will never be the same.  He is doing the Lords work, what every young man should be doing.  A mission can teach so much.  I am grateful for the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It makes a weak man strong.
till next week:)

THE CALL

mission call memories

"CAST NOT AWAY THEREFORE YOUR CONFIDENCE" by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland - from a BYU devotional given March 2, 1999

It is plain and very sobering truth that before great moments, certainly before great spiritual moments, there can be adversity, opposition, and darkness.  Life has some of these moments for us, and occasionally they come just as we are approaching an important decision or a significant step in our lives.

April 8, 2013

Mondays are great days for me.  I love hearing from Elder Wilcox.
A quote from Austin:  "The church is true! The Book of Mormon is the word of God, and the Lord answers prayers!!! He continues to do it every day out here in the mission field."
In the letter I wrote him I asked him a few questions.  He really liked the idea of questions and answers.
A few of the questions I asked were:
What does he do on p-day or preparation day?
His response:  P-days are one of the most busiest days of the week.  First they study, and then at around 10:30 they do email, and then grocery shopping.  They then have a p-day activity at the church, and then hurry and get ready to go out and teach the restored gospel. They play a lot of dodgeball.
Do the members feed you every night?
His response: 3-4 times a week  (our Utah missionaries are spoiled)
What was your favorite conference talk?
His response:  President Henry B. Eyring's talk
Austin is studying Jesus the Christ and in his words  ITS INSANE.  He said it is a hard book to read, but is determined to finish reading it while he is on his mission.
Elder Wilcox is doing well.  I can feel his missionary spirit in our home.
I am grateful for my Savior and his atonement.  I am blessed to be a part of this wonderful gospel.
Continue praying for his safety and for the spirit to guide him in his efforts.

Happy Birthday Elder Wilcox

March 25, 2012

This has been a sick week here in Syracuse.  Stomach flu sick, not a good sick.  The updating of Elder Wilcox has been a little delayed.
On Monday, we got 3 letters.  One by email, and then a handwritten letter.  I think I needed that to carry me through the week.
-He had his first companion exchange with his district leader, Elder Nance from Kaysville, Utah.  He learned new ways to tract, and will implement them into his routine.
-They went on Baylor Campus ad got to see one of the bears.  And while biking along the river they saw 20-30 turtles chilling on the logs.
-Sounds like he is loving his bike. He is becoming quite skilled, but did accidentally spill his blizzard. oops.
-Mark 12:1-9, he shared the parable of the husbandmen.  He really liked this parable.
His favorite right know is the story of Samson.  there is lots of symbolism in this story.  I am anxious to look for these symbols. This happens to be his brother Brayden's favorite too.
-He decided to do a mail fast this week, with the purpose to get a baptismal date. And that is exactly what they got. I love this young man so much.  My mommy heart could explode with gratitude.
His favorite advice is from his dad and helps him look forward to better days and enjoy the happy moments he has;
THERE WILL BE GOOD DAYS, AND DON'T GET TOO HIGH ON THOSE DAYS, AND THERE WILL BE BAD DAYS, DON'T GET TOO LOW ON THOSE.
Austin will be 19 on April 8th.  I cannot believe it.
love him lots.
thank you for all the love and support you give him.
love,
Ami

Sundays can seem long, anticipating Monday's letter.  I hope it has been a good week for Elder Wilcox.  I sure miss him.

March 20, 2013 - Waco, Texas

March 20, 2013
The purpose and central blessing of life is change.   It is to be changed to become more like Jesus Christ.  It is to incorporate into your character, the qualities of His character.  It is to move from one degree of intelligence and capacity to the next, and from there to the next, until you see God face to face and know Him as He knows you.  THE FOURTH MISSIONARY BY Lawrence E. Corbridge
all things cant be, and never will be, the way they used to be.  Life is always changing; it never stays the same.
This is one of those fights I have.  I don't want my kids to grow up and leave.  Yet, it is necessary and it is good.
Austin is doing very well.  It has only been 7 weeks, and I see a change.  In his words; "the church is true!" I remember asking Austin if he prayed to know this church is true.  He told me he didn't need to.  He already knew.
"The mission is changing who I am.  I am beginning to see the change it has on me.  I am growing closer and closer to Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father every day!  My faith is tested every day, and every day I stand triumphant.  Whether I touch somebodies heart that day or not, I stand as a witness of God, at all times, and in all things, and in all places! (Young Woman's theme?)  I love this gospel, and the many blessings and strengths it has given me."
I have so much to say as his mom.  I know there are tiny hearts popping out  of me and jumping around, because of my feelings of gratitude.  This missionary experience is one I would like to hold close to my heart, but share it also.  I feel a new sense of peace in my home, a quietness.   I have moments of weakness when my heart feels empty of him and his grandma.  I am trying to be unselfish and let them go.  There are many other souls who need 2 of my cherished loved ones at this time.
Austin always has a few words for the priests quorum.  Read the Book of Mormon and Preach my Gospel.
-One small note from this mom of a missionary,  Keep praying and writing.  He feels the prayers and enjoys the company of letters.  He may not always be able to reply.  He seems very busy doing the Lords work.  I love this boy:)

Elder Wilcox has been out 5 weeks!  It seems like longer.  As the weather warms, I see kids boarding and look for him.  And, then I remember he is serving the Lord:)

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

March 12, 2013
Elder Wilcox is thankful for the letters  hes received.  He got a letter almost everyday of the week last week.   He said it has been a huge help to have everyone supporting him and his decision to serve a mission.  In his words,  He is stoked he has made lots of good friends through the years.  I am happy he has too.  We are very blessed.
He tasted frog legs and said it tasted just like chicken.  I didn't know frogs had any meat on their legs.  I guess they do.
Mission life is getting easier.  He doesn't seem to be missing home as much.  This makes me happy.  I miss him enough to make up for all of his home sickness:)  He realizes the more  he devotes himself  to the Lord's work, the better he has felt an d the greater the comfort.
We miss him at home.  But, I have a strong feeling he is doing ok.  I am proud of him and I thank my Heavenly Father for his obedience.

Sunday, March 10, 2013

Tomorrow is p-day for my elder.  I can't wait to hear from him.  Mondays have become my favorite day of the week.  I enjoy being still for the moment that I read his letters.  I miss him lots, but I also know he is doing good.  He will bless many.
Without faith a man can do nothing; with it all things are possible.  SIR WILLIAM OSLER

First Week in Texas

March 1, 2013
Elder Wilcox has reported cockroaches in his apartment.  He said they are not as big as the ones in the movies.  His companion is Elder Erickson, he is from a small town in Utah.  He was also a wrestler.  The majority of people in Waco are Baptist.  He said they are really nice to the missionaries.
-One regret he has is that he feels like he didn't spend enough time with family . He may not have liked fishing or hunting but knows now that it would've been a great way to spend time with his dad and family, instead of playing x-box or sleeping.
-He loves his bike.  Thank you Uncle Scott:) He feels like he is driving a Porsche.
-His p-day (preparation day) the day he does laundry, grocery shopping, and writing letters is on Mondays.  I will try to be better at updating sooner.
-I miss him tons, but am proud of him.  I enjoy creating fun packages and writing to him.

Monday, February 25, 2013
